Sven Bergelt (1983) est un artiste allemand basé à Leipzig. Il crée des installations in situ en lien avec les structures sociales, l’écriture historique ou les processus politiques. Lors de ses interventions dans l’espace publique il redéfinit les notions d’espaces pour changer les perspectives familières.
Son intervention dans l’espace urbain tire son nom de l’expression désignant la fuite : «faire le mur» est une barrière artificielle et une action visuelle forte. De part et d’autre de la rue, Sven Bergelt installe un mur noir qui relie les bâtiments qui se font face dans leur totalité, du point le plus haut au point le plus bas. Ainsi on ne voit plus, on ne perçoit plus ce qu’il y a “derrière”, alors qu’en réalité il n’y a plus ni de devant ni de derrière. Un passage invisible au premier coup d’oeil permet tout de même aux passant de le traverser qui, métaphoriquement ainsi que visuellement apparaissent et disparaissent. Le rideau noir transforme la rue en scène pour mettre en avant l’espace publique, une grande surface noir considérée comme une réduction de l’information visuelle, ainsi on se concentre sur les personnes qui sont devant. Ce qui intéresse l’artiste dans cette intervention est notamment la tension et le questionnement qui apparait chez le regardeurs, ici les piétons, lorsqu’ils font face à ce grand mur noir. La perspective du reste de la rue étant obstruée, il ou elle se demande alors ce qu’il y a de l’autre côté, pourquoi est-ce caché? Cela laisse donc libre court à l’imagination de celui ou celle qui regarde, qui vit cette installation. Au final ce n’est qu’un grand tissu noir.

Sven Bergelt (1983) is a German artist based in Leipzig. He creates site specific installations in connection with social structures, historical writing or political processes. During his interventions in the public space he redefines its notions in order to change the familiar perspectives.
His intervention in the urban space takes its name from the French expression designating the escape: «to make the wall» is an artificial barrier and a strong visual intervention. On both sides of the street, Sven Bergelt installs a black wall that connects the buildings facing each other in their entirety, from the highest to the lowest point. Thus we no longer see, we no longer perceive what is «behind», when actually there is no longer front or back. An invisible passage at first glance still allows passers-by to cross it and also, metaphorically and visually, to appear and disappear. The black curtain transforms the street into a stage to highlight the public space, a large black surface considered as a reduction of visual information, so we focus on the people who are in front. What interests the artist in this intervention is notably the tension and the questioning which appears to the viewers, in this case the pedestrians, when they face this big black wall. The prospect of the rest of the street being obstructed, he or she wonders what’s on the other side, why is it hidden? This leaves space to the imagination of the one who looks, who lives this installation. In the end it is only a big black piece of fabric.
